Red State Project

The purpose of this project is to utilize digital storytelling to provoke thought and dialogue, and to engage our community in art intended to instill deeper appreciation for the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Oklahoma.

Red State Show Statement

HIV/AIDS - these words cause some to back away, to close their eyes, their ears. An all-to-common disease that should illicit empathy continues to be treated as taboo by our society. Red State is my way of bringing attention to those living with HIV/AIDS, to show these multifaceted individuals as more than just a statistic, an illness. I pair portraits of Oklahomans of all ages infected with HIV/AIDS—some boldly facing the camera, some protecting their anonymity by turning away—with recordings of their voices. The exhibit keeps our eyes and our ears open, gives those living in silence the opportunity tell us their names, their stories. I hope that Red State encourages you to talk about HIV/AIDS openly, to break the stigma that is the true disease, a disease that affects all of us, stealing compassion, community, and solidarity.
